In September 2023, Children First Derby applied for £2,000 funding from The DACP.
A registered charity founded in 1974 with the aim of relieving the distress and suffering experienced by families and children. We support vulnerable children, young people and families to make a positive impact on their lives and those around them. We currently employ 18 staff and work with over 60 local volunteers to support over 500 disadvantaged children, young people and families each year.
We currently support vulnerable families in Derby through our Family Support Service, and what we often see is that these families live in homes that have unused and unsafe gardens or outdoor space, which children and adults cannot access or enjoy because the outdoor space is unsafe or unsuitable due to the following issues or reasons:
• Rubbish
• No greenery, for example paved areas or muddy ground.
• Lack of understanding or knowledge on how to improve the area.
• Financial difficulties that prohibit them from utilising the spaces
• Unsafe, some gardens have become dumping grounds for local drug users to discard unsanitary and unsafe items over the fencing, leaving the residents frightened to use their own gardens.
We propose to identify and prioritise 5 properties in Derby that are most in need, carry out the work to refurbish and upgrade the outdoor space and make it into a safe, accessible and usable green space that these vulnerable children, young people and families can enjoy as well as growing their own fruits and vegetables thus creating a positive healthy family environment. The work will be overseen and managed by a member of staff and will be undertaken by volunteers who work with the charity.
